You know, I f***ing loved Amidala before she became Padmé. She was a real warrior queen, and could be cold as ice, which was just awesome. I can imagine a whole crazy AU in which the monarchy of Naboo is not elected, and Amidala wants to expand Naboo's power so that it is never attacked again, and so she is a Palpatine supporter all along, and is killed by a Jedi in the end (not Anakin, maybe even Obi-Wan!!), and Luke and Leia eventually find out about this and it just breaks their itty bitty hearts
... Which got me to thinking. We know that people called for Queen Amidala to stay in power since she was so popular... So here are my thoughts: Padme Narberrie was elected queen and Sabe was her closest handmaiden. BUT Sabe has a much stronger personality - she wants power, but not just for herself. Padme wants to stay and duke it out in the Courts, trusting the Senate and Palpatine to support her, leaving the planet in Federation hands.
Sabe wants to return to Naboo and fight so she persuades/blackmails/forces/encites the other handmaidens to murder Padme. When Anakin comes in and the Queen says she's "sent Padme on an errand"; her body is being stolen away. Sabe returns to Naboo and fights in the battle, using another handmaiden as a decoy.
The only problem? The senator caught her at it... BUT he's now Supreme Chancellor, so has no direct role in planetary affairs. He threatens to expose her... or not... if they can come to some agreement...?
