Author’s Notes: Indebted to Tea for the British, by Denys Forrest, which provided such details about the E.I.C as the location of their offices and surrounds and the types of tea imported, and a lot of slightly more useless bits of information; that for instance, the teas and textiles were originally stored together in East India House, but people kept stealing the fabrics while “looking” at the teas!

Summary: This is another version of how Mercer met Cutler, different than my first, more picturesque. I needed to rescue Mr. Mercer’s… um… integrity? Lostwiginity described Mercer as “a very deadly and creepy mother,” and in this fic, he gives young Cutler a bit of maternal advice and not-so-maternal comfort. This is perhaps closer to life of amesu’s Mercer than mine of yore. Think of it as author rehabilitation, while also trying to answer a few questions. Pekoe and congou are fine black teas of the period.

More details: the name Cutler is an Old English one, meaning “knife-maker”, and Mercer is a first name coming from Middle English derivative of the Latin Mercator, meaning “merchant.” They should swap names! Just for interest’s sake, “Beckett” means “little stream.”
